Scaling & Root Planning

The standard for treating advanced gum disease is usually a dental deep cleaning, which consists of two procedures: scaling and root planing. Scaling involves clearing away the plaque and tartar deposits from below and along the gumline, directly removing the source of the infection. Then, we “plane,” or smooth down, the roots of the teeth. This helps the gums reattach to the teeth while preventing the buildup of harmful bacteria in those areas in the future.
