Diagnosis & Treatment
Before we can effectively treat your TMJ disorder, our dentists will first need to determine the cause of the problem. TMD can develop for a variety of reasons, including:
• Bruxism (chronic teeth grinding and jaw clenching).
• A misaligned bite.
• Physical trauma to the face or jaw.
To diagnose your TMD, our dentists may capture X-rays of your jaw and ask you specific questions about your symptoms. Then, they’ll be able to move forward with one of the following treatment options.
Equilibration / Occlusal Adjustments
Bite alignment problems are one of the most common causes of TMD. If a crown or bridge is seated too high, for example, it could throw off the overall balance of your bite. The force would be unevenly distributed, exerting pressure on your jaw joints over time. Occlusal adjustments, also known as equilibration, involve making careful alterations to the shape of the teeth or restorations that are creating problems. As a result, the upper and lower jaws can meet in harmony again.
Occlusal Splints
An occlusal splint is a custom-fit tray that is made to be worn overnight. As you sleep, the splint gently repositions the lower jaw forward, which alleviates the tension on the TMJs. After a few weeks or months of wearing their splint every night, many patients report permanent relief from TMD-related discomfort. The splint also doubles as a nightguard, preventing teeth grinding and jaw clenching that can worsen TMD.
