When Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Really Necessary?

Without enough room to properly erupt, the wisdom teeth might become impacted, or trapped beneath the gums, which can be painful in addition to increasing the risk of infection. The wisdom teeth may end up pushing against the nearby teeth and shifting them out of the ideal alignment. While some patients never experience problems with their wisdom teeth, it’s best to extract these teeth sooner rather than later if our dentists determine that not doing so would be risky.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Recovering from wisdom tooth extractions usually takes three or four days, but some patients may take as long as a full week to finish healing. You’ll probably be able to resume your normal activities the day after your procedure, but you should avoid smoking, spitting, drinking through a straw, and vigorously exercising; otherwise, the stitches or blood clot protecting the extraction site could come loose. Eat only soft foods at first before working up to heartier foods. Call us immediately if your pain, bleeding, or swelling worsens after a couple of days.
